New Delhi: Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud was sworn in as the 5th Chief Justice of India in a ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan Wednesday morning. The President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath.
In his opening statement on assuming charge, Justice Chandrachud said “Serving the ordinary citizen is my priority”. He also promised reforms in registry and judicial processes.
Justice Chandrachud will head the Supreme Court for two years up to retirement on 10 Nov 2024. He succeeds Justice UU Lalit who helmed the top court for a short stint of 74 days.
Justice Chandrachud was elevated as Supreme Court judge in May of 2016 and has been part of Benches including the Constitutional that handed out historical verdicts such as Ayodhya and right to privacy.
