NEW DELHI : Police and CPRF personnel fortified UP Bhavan in Delhi Friday evening, taking dozens of students who arrived for protest, into forceful custody. DYFI leaders who arrived to lend solidarity too were whisked away and the national president Mohammad Riyas was placed under arrest.
Police accosted three buses filled with student protesters several meters before the UP Bhavan, forcing those who hit the street back inside. The buses along with students were taken into custody. All passing vehicles, including autorickshaws and buses, are being checked to ensure no protester neared UP Bhavan, the venue announced by Jamia Students for their demonstration today.
Visuals showed several students of Jamia Millia University and JNU, including girls, being dragged into three buses, two of which were driven to Mandir Marg police station while the whereabouts of the third bus remains unclear.
Earlier in the day, the police blocked students’ march to Prime Minister’s residence at Jor Bagh. They were demanding release of Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekar Azad who remains in judicial custody of 14 days. Azad had led a massive protest in old quarters of Delhi ,against Citizenship Amendment Act, early last week.
