New Delhi : Election Commission(EC) cannot interfere with policy decisions of political parties, said CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury. That’s none of EC’s business. It is not up to EC to regulate promises a party makes to public in terms of policies or welfare schemes, said Yechury, adding that, the Commission’s current stance runs contrary to its submission to Supreme Court regarding freebies promised by political parties.
Any effort to rein in political parties or infringe their rights shall be stiffly opposed for. EC’s current move is motivated by pressuring from Central govt, said Yechury.
Context: In an unprecedented move, the Election Commission sought to question poll promises and freebies various political parties made in their election manifesto.
