NEW DELHI : Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was sentenced to Life Imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl in Unnao in 2017. He is also required to pay Rs 25 Lakh to the victim in  addition to his term in prison.

CBI counsel and the woman’s lawyer urged to court to hand the politician the maximum punishment under law pointing out the long ordeal suffered by the victim after the rape, while Sengar’s counsel pleaded for the minimum jail term of 10 years citing that, he had no prior history of crime.

Sengar’s conviction comes under the Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act – offence by a public servant committing penetrative sexual assault against a minor.

The Supreme Court had ordered transfer of the rape case, together with four other related ones,  from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi, considering the political clout Sengar wielded.

The four other cases involved – framing the rape survivor’s father in false firearms case, his death in judicial custody, orchestrating vehicle accident that seriously injured the victim, and a separate case of the woman’s rape by three of his henchmen.
