NEW DELHI : Gujarat has at least one case of rape reported each day, indicates statistics released for past five years. The state also tops the chart in women/child abductions and child labour.
On an average 1200 women are subject to rape each year. The figures since 2014 up to September 2019 total to 2775 rapes.
572 women were raped last year alone, making it the highest tally in past six years. The number of rapes registered between January and September this year figures to 400. Ahmedabad accounts for the highest incidence of rape with 291 cases registered between 2015 and Sept 2019. Surat falls second with 214 cases.
Gujarat also has the highest incidence of child and women abductions in the country.
The data released by NGO “Save The Children” pertaining to 2014, is appalling. 63 percent of the state’s girls and 36 percent boys have been victims of some form of sexual assault.
Gujarat also leads in its employment of child labour. From 2.8 crore children employed in industry or business in the country, a whopping 35 percent are from Gujarat, says the study.
