Allahabad: Court in Uttar Pradesh acquitted three accused in the Hathras gang-rape case that shocked the nation. The SC/ST Special Court found only the 20-year-old prime accused, Sandeep, as guilty for the crime. The rest of the gang namely Luv Khush(23), Ravi(35) and Ram Kumar(26) were freed of their charges of rape and murder.
The Tragic Case
The 19-year-old Dalit victim was abducted allegedly by a gang of four from her home in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district on 14 September 2014. She was subject to brutal rape and torture that broke her bones. Also her cut was severed off.
The victim died on 29 September and was cremated hastily by police officials in the middle of night, allegedly on instructions of the Hathras District Magistrate.
Citing cremation of this kind as an “extremely sensitive” matter that touched upon basic human fundamental rights, the Allahabad High Court had taken suo motto cognizance of the occurrence in October 2020.
