Hundreds Defy Prohibitory Orders; Yechury, D Raja Arrested in Delhi : CAA Protests

NEW DELHI : As hundreds, defying prohibitory orders,  gathered at Red Fort area to protest CAA, CPI(M) Gen Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI Gen Secretary D Raja were arrested along with several others in the national capital on Thursday.

Police had  earlier refused to grant permission to  the  Left march citing  the Prohibitory order placed in Delhi. Those arrested  include  Prakash Karat, Vrinda Karat and Annie Raja. Mobile and internet services have also been suspended.

The Left march was scheduled to take off at  Mandi House and conclude in Jantar Mantar.  Police who arrived at the scene even as leaders congregated at Barakamba, took the veterans and others by force According to sources the cops were crude in their behaviour even towards the leaders.

Apart from Delhi, Gujarat and Chennai are also clamped with prohibitory orders.



In  UP,  where the orders came in early on, police warned people against participating in protests. Several protesters were arrested in similar fashion in the state, including Lucknow. 

In Bengaluru, police have announced Prohibitory orders lasting up to midnight Saturday. There is heavy police deployment in several states across the country.

In view of the ongoing protests, 14 Metro stations across  Delhi have been shut. The stations lie  in close proximity to  Jamia Millia Islamic University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Central university.
