MUMBAI : In Maharashtra where Covid pandemic continues to rage unabated, 29 more Malayali nurses have been diagnosed with the virus, the major chunk of 26 among them coming from the  high-end Jaslok Hospital. Bombay Hospital reported two nurses who tested positive and Bhatia Hospital accounted for the other one.

Earlier, 25 navy men in the city had tested positive for coronavirus .

The countrywide coronavirus tally meanwhile surged to 14,000. In the latest, a Malayalali doctor too has been confirmed with the infection. Maharashtra now has more than 100 of its healthcare professionals infected with the virus, amid growing criticism  of how hospitals are not providing safety gear including PPE kits to their staff, including those with direct exposure to patients.

Data update on Saturday puts nationwide infection tally as 14,378 , recoveries  1992 and deaths from the virus at 480.

991 fresh cases have been recorded around the country in past 24 hours alone with Rajasthan accounting for 41 of them.

Covid deaths in past on day numbered 43 nationwide with  Rajasthan alone reporting 19 including 2 new deaths today. The state has reported 1270 infections so far.

Meanwhile in Mumbai, Bombay Municipal Corporation(BMC) denied reports of communal spread in the city. The claim comes at a time when the tally for active covid cases has crossed 2000 in the commercial hub. Incidentally, the state authorities are able to keep numbers low than there likely are by refusing to test asymptomatic persons under quarantine.

BMC claims to have tested over 28,000 city dwellers so far. Even so, Dharavi – the area most feared to trigger escalation by its virtue of being  most overcrowded and unsanitary slum – has reported 15 more cases Friday spiking its tally to 101. With death of a 62-year old patient yesterday, Dharavi’s death tally rose to 62.
