NEW DELHI : The Jawaharlal Nehru Universtity (JNU)  students in hundreds, are set to proceed to HRD ministry in the capital  Friday, seeking urgent interventions to restore smooth functioning of the varsity.

The month-long protests at JNU campus revolves around a draft hostel manual that increased hostel-fee. The students ask for a complete roll-back of this hike saying, quality education should remain affordable to all.

The recommendations contained in the  special committee report, should be made public, demanded JNU Students Union President Aysha Ghosh.

The HRD ministry had constituted a three-member high-powered committee to explore ways to resolve the ongoing university crisis.

There is an established legal committee  comprising student representatives from all departments, to oversee making up for lost learning hours and other important issues affecting the students. However the Vice Chancellor has sidelined this crucial committee, to take far-reaching  decisions.

HRD’s high-powered committee has no right to make recommendations or take decisions, argued Aysha.

The vice chancellor Jagdish Kumar, who refuses to hold talks even at this stage, should be removed from his post, she added..

HRD Minister Ramesh Pokriyal , who was held hostage by students for six hours has constituted the high-powered committee.

The 3-member body spoke with students, teachers and university authorities. The VC has shattered the democratic nature of campus functioning. in terms of participatory decisions process, the students told the committee. Incidentally, the Vice Chancellor did not meet the committee.
