New Delhi: BJP became widely isolated in the raging controversy over Kongu Nadu. Nearly all major political parties opposed its plans for ripping out Kongu Nadu from Tamil Nadu to convert it into a union territory. Interestingly, the central leadership has not talked its view up to now. The Union Minister from Tamil Nadu, Murugan, is silent on the topic as well. Also, BJP state president in Tamil Nadu is looking the other way without comments.
It is not BJP goal to split Tamil Nadu and form Kongu Nadu, said the party’s state Tamil Nadu spokesperson ANS Prasad. Rather BJP aims to have a thriving Tamil Nadu and stronger India, he added. BJP state general secretaries are yet to give their formal opinion which is why state office bearers are airing their personal views, said Prasad.
Meanwhile, several among BJP state and district office bearers, and some district units have expressed their backing for Kongu Nadu formation. BJP’s Coimbatore north unit went a step further by passing a resolution seeking bifurcation. A faction of leaders and party workers had expressed their support for the split on social media. However, the plan sparked wide protest across Tamil Nadu - the reason why BJP spokesperson made comments that he did to allay anxiety.
