Shivamogga : Eight persons have been confirmed killed so far in Karnataka’s Shivamogga after a truck carrying gelatin sticks - a mining explosive - exploded late last night around 10.30 pm. The impact from the explosions caused tremors in as far as four districts with residents running out of their homes fearing quake.
The truck was transporting gelatin sticks to a stone-crushing unit near Hunsodu village - 7 km from Shivamogga - and was parked with workers resting at the time of explosion. There are nearly 100 quarrying sites in the vicinity.
The impact from the blast created a huge crater and rescue operations did not commence soon after the tragedy, waiting for experts to assess safety for personnel to enter the spot. Authorities fear the death-toll could be higher than 8 confirmed so far.
