Imphal : Clashes resume between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. One person was reported killed, in a firing targeting three Kuku villages in Churachandpur. Three others were wounded in the incident that took place Thursday morning at Moirang in Bishnupur district.
Both sides exchanged gunfire starting Wednesday night and well into the morning. Several houses were set on fire and many fled to safer stretches. The security forces stepped in to stop cross-community firing, however, tensions run high in the region.
Clashes are fierce in Moirang’s Lokdak close to the lake in Phubkchao. With no respite to crossfire, several people fled abandoning their homes.
Situation in Manipur is alarming in the past few days. Buses carrying soldiers were torched recently the night before when the Army men refused the accosting crowd to check for people from rival community inside the vehicle. . Shortly after, the mob set fire to vacant houses, the Army used as makeshift accommodation. The fury against Army began with allegations that men from Forces molested Kuki women in the More market locality.
