BENGALURU : In direct contrast to PM Modi’s claim at Ramlila Maidan, BJP-ruled Karnataka has launched its first detention centre for illegal immigrants. The facility is located near Nelamangala, 40 km from Bengaluru.
PM Narendra Modi on Sunday, addressing a rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi had said, there are no detention centres in India. He was speaking in context of the National Register of Citizens in conjunction with Citizenship Amendment Act.
Barely two days now, the Commissioner of Social Welfare Department RS Peddappaiah told a news paper “We have opened the centre and it’s ready to house illegal immigrants.”.
The detention camp is a makeover on the Social Welfare Department hostel. It has six rooms, a kitchen and a security room and can house up to 24 people. The compound is secure with barbed wire and tow watchtowers built inside.
Curiously, the centre was originally scheduled for inaugural in January, but has been advanced following instructions from the Centre.
According to sources, the BJP has begun collecting information on illegal immigrants in the state and will implement NRC shortly.
