New Delhii: The Prime Minister should admit fault, apologise to farmers, and repeal the farm laws, said CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury. On one hand, the government has ample time to coerce sports stars and other celebrities to tweet using hashtags while on the other, it has no time to hear the farmers out. It indicates where the govt priorities lie. Despite all of government's suppressive measures, farmers in rising numbers are pouring onto protest centres. The fight will continue till the 3 laws are repealed, said Yechury in his tweet.
Context: A handful of film actors and cricket stars appeared a few days back with pro-Modi govt messages against the farmers’ ongoing protest.
Other reactions: Deploying celebrities will not help recover global repute India has lost from anti-people attitude of its govt, said Shashi Tharoor on his twitter handle. . It is shameful of govt to fetch western sports stars onto the scene, he added.
It is a shame that it took Rihana, Greta Thunburg and such others to shake up our Foriegn Ministry to see things, tweeted former Union Minister P Chidambaram. And, when the ministry responds that saying, outsiders must not interfere with Indian, why it respond to military coup in Myanmar. at all?, he asked.
Why is situation in Myanmar getting to be growing concern of this ministry? Why is it issuing daily press releases on home affairs in Sri Lanka and Nepal ? Why did PM react to Trump-fans storming Capitol in Washington? So, how does a global figure and learned individual like S Jayashankar endorse the foolish claim made by the ministry, asked Chidhambaram in his tweet.
