New Delhi/Paris : Soon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in France on his official tour, the European Union(EU) passed resolution strongly condemning India’s central government and the BJP in context of Manipur riots.
The EU Parliament demanded of Modi government to immediately halt the ethnic and religious attacks perpetrating in Manipur and to protect religious minorities including the Christians. The EU resolution is viewed as step to override India’s diplomatic pressure. What transpired was, strong warning from the EU to Narendra Modi who has not spoken despite 70 days into the violent communal riots.
The resolution strongly condemns the ultra-nationalist stand of senior BJP leaders “The government should refrain from handing out hate and intolerance. It is politically motivated divisive policies of Hindu majoritarianism that culminated in riots. Army bias in killings in Manipur has led to mistrust of authorities.. “Don’t criminalise whose who criticise government’s conduct” the resolution said.
The plenary session of EU Parliament discussed the Manipur riots in its hour on violation of human rights, democracy and rule of law. European MPs said in the ongoing negations on free trade between India and the European Union, India should ensure there would be no tolerance on human rights violations in the country. The special powers of armed forces should be withdrawn and internet services restored, they demanded.
