New Delhi : There should be neutral body for the appointment of Election Commissioner, ruled Supreme Court. It ordered to form a Committee for making important appointments at Election Commission, similar to the Committee that posts CBI Directors.
The 5-member Constitution Bench recommended formation of a Committee that will include the Prime Minister, the Lok Sabha Opposition Leader and the Chief Justice of Suprme Court for the purpose. The Bench also recommended that the three-member Committee thus formed shall recommend names of prospective Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner to the country’s President. The directive came from the Constitution Bench comprising Justice KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy and CT Ravikumar.
Theruling was handed over a batch of petitions that demanded impartial apparatus for appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner.
