NEW DELHI : In a major twist to Maharashtra’s ongoing crisis, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced his resignation after , Ajit Pawar, whose breakaway from NCP, reportedly paved way for overnight BJP-rule in the state, stepped down as Deputy Chief Minister earlier in the day.
The twin resignations come in the wake of Supreme Court order this morning, asking to conduct Floor Test in Maharashtra within 24 hours i.e. by 5 pm Wednesday. The governor shall swear-in the lawmakers soon after the test, the ruling added.
The Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress combine welcomed the verdict as ‘Victory of The Truth’.
Ajit’s exit comes barely days after he took oath as Fadnavis’s deputy early Saturday morning. “Ajit told me he wanted to quit for personal reasons,” Fadnavis had said when the news broke.
In a hint of BJP failing to make it to the majority mark, Fadnavis said “The new govt will fall under its own weight.”
On the overnight ascend to power, Fadnavis said, Ajit was NCP’s legislative party leader and pledged his support. But after court order today, he says he doesn’t want to continue. Hence the govt has lost its majority and cannot continue.
Fadnavis who is presently addressing the media, will deliver his resignation letter to the governor after the press meet.
