NEW DELHI : Amid widespread mistrust of upcoming NPR, the Centre announced that the survey will also collect details of birthplaces of ones’ parents. The Trial Form, containing this parameter, was used in 74 districts to collect details of over 30 lakh people. During its trial, the authorities did not receive any adverse feedback from the respondents, hence the format will be used in the actual phase, said Home Ministry sources.
NPR data earlier comprised 15 personal parameters. Over and above these, the Modi govt format will now ask for birth place of father and mother, last place of residence, Aadhaar number, Voter ID Card, Mobile number and Driving License.
Invariably, the additional details are set to heighten fears that NPR would be used to substantiate the National Citizenship Register(NRC) – a dossier that will render lakhs of Muslim refugees stateless.
The NPR was first introduced by UPA govt during its second term in 2010, The Modi govt subsequently revised it. And now, the 2020 NPR survey is scheduled to be carried out alongside Census exercise.
In effect, the entire process would be in line with amendment brought about by Vajpayee govt in 2003, which allows usage of NPR data to finalise the National Register for Citizens.
