Odisha’s Triple Train Accident: CBI Arrests 3 Including Section Engineers

Bhubaneswar : CBI makes its initial arrests in the worst train accident in country’s history  that left 290 dead in Odisha on 2 June.

Arrested in the course of investigations are Section Engineer Aruun Kumar Mohanta, Section Engineers Mohammed Amir Khan and Technician Pappu Kumar. All men are charged under Sec 304 and 201 of CrPC.

According to sources familiar with the investigations, the trio tried to destroy evidence to prevent catching up to their role in the accident. The CBI had inspected collision site along with forensic experts who scoured the area. Inspections ranged from examining possibility of foul play, technical glitch or human error.

A faulty wiring was found in a location box near Bahanaga Bazar railway station. It had gone unnoticed by the Signal and Telecom(S&T) staff. The location box has cables that control signaling functions.

The Accident
On 2 June, the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, Howrah-bound SMVP Superfast Express from Bengaluru and  a goods train collided resulting the country’s worst rail accidents near Bahanga railway station in Odisha’s Balasore district.
