NEW DELHI : The long march, taken out by students of Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) protesting fee-hike, was stopped by the police as  the unrest intensified.

At least 15 protesters including the Students Union president Aysha Ghosh have been removed through arrests.  Curfew has been clamped around the campus and there is heavy police deplayment in the region.

Additionally, Sec 144 (unlawful assembly) has been imposed in the area around the Parliament, as it proceeds with day one of its winter session.

Meanwhile, the Ministry for Human Resources and Development also formed a three-member panel this morning to recommend measures to restore normalcy of its central university.

Though committees were formed earlier to find mid-way, the talks reached nowhere.

The students have been protesting against the fee hike for more than 10 days after a draft hostel manual was issued  indicating fee hike, dress code and hostel timings.

Mess Security Deposit of Rs 5500 earlier had been hiked to Rs 12,000.  At the hostel, single room rate hiked to Rs 600 room  a previous Rs 20 pm. Rooms accommodating more than 2 students, would be charged Rs 300 per person instead of Rs 10 pm earlier. Also, an introduction of Rs 1700 toward maintenance fund has irked the students further.

The charges were partially slashed after protests began 10 days back. The room for single-bed will be Rs 600 per month, while it will be Rs 300 for those below poverty line(BPL) category.

The management withdrew time restrictions and dress code too 5 days ago.
