Protest Deaths Continue : 18 Killed in UP Alone; Over 3 Lakh Rally in Jaipur

NEW DELHI : Anti-CAA protests continue to claim lives with death toll in UP now rising to 18. The tally indicates those killed since Thursday noon up to evening Sunday. 3 died of bullet wounds in Meerut, even as police deny opening fire in the town. Meanwhile, footages showing  police shooting at protesters in Kanpur, are doing rounds l on social media. On Sunday, hundreds took to streets holding the national flag and shouting slogans in different parts of Delhi.


Protests were held in high security zones of the city as wekk. The Demonstrations included street plays at different points and other performances. Students, teachers, auto drivers, commoners all turned into agitators in the capital. Doctors in stethoscopes were seen addressing crowds at several places.

The govt meanwhile is handing down stringent action against protesters picked from the streets. Of 5,400 people taken into custody in Uttar Pradesh, 705 were held back in remand.  Committees have been formed to trace properties owned by those who indulged in vandalism. More than 13,000 social media accounts are under the scanner for inflammatory posts. Internet has been suspended up to Monday in 21 districts. Schools and colleges continue to remain closed in several parts in the northern states.

 Jaipur on Sunday, saw a mammoth silent  rally of over 3 lakh people in the joint demonstration called by  different parties including Congress, CPI(M), Aam Admi  Party, SP, RLD and JDS. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot led the rally.

At Aligarh University, teachers and non-teaching staff staged protest around the campus on Sunday. Over 3000 people in Mumbai’s Dharavi participated in the protest held there yesterday. With no sign of lull in protests, prohibitory orders lasting two months, have been imposed on Imphal West in Manipur.
