New Delhi : In a proud moment for Kerala, Vice Admiral R Harikumar has been appointed as the new Chief of Indian Navy, the first Malayali ever to hold the distinction. Harikumar succeeds Admiral Karambir Singh who retires as Chief of the Naval Staff(CNS).
I am happy to take over the charge; This is an especially proud moment, said R Harikumar on his appointment. The family members too attended the succession ceremony. Harikumar was commander-in-chief of the Mumbai-headquartered strategic Western Naval Command and has been honored with various prestigious awards including Parmavisisht Seva Medal.
The navy chief is Thiruvananthapuram Pattom Native and joined the force in 1983. Harikumar has served as commander to warships such as INS Viratt, INS Rabir and so forth.
