Rahul’s Disqualification To Stay; Gujarat High Court Refuses To Overturn Ruling

Ahmedabad : It is setback again for Rahul Gandhi on the defamation case front. The Gujarat High Court upheld lower court’s guilty verdict and clarified it will not intervene. Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as legislator will remain, the HC said.

Rahul Gandhi has around 10 cases against him and is free to approach the Supreme Court, the High Court observed. With this, Rahul Gandhi will cease to be Lok Sabha member as MP from Wayanad.

The case relates to Rahul’s election campaign of 2019 in Karnataka’s Kolar where he quizziically remarked that all thieves went by the name Modi. BJP MLA Purnesh Modi lodged complaint citing Rahul had insulted the entire Modi community.

The trial court found Rahul Gandhi guilty of defamation and the District Court later rejected his appeal. The Surat trial court awarded two years imprisonment in the case. Meanwhile, Congress circles said the High Court verdict does not come as a surprise and that the Party will approach the Supreme Court.
