SC Sends Notice To Delhi Police Over Petition Filed By NewsClick Editor Challenging Arrest

New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Thursday issued Notice to Delhi Police against pleas submitted by  NewsClick editor and the firm’s HR Dept head, questioning their  arrests and continued detention under UAPA Act. The apex court granted Delhi Police two-weeks time in which to file reply. The hearing is next slated on the 30th.

Earlier,  editor Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakraborty had approached Delhi High Court however, the court rejected their pleas. They were both arrested on  3 October following raids the Special Cell of Delhi Police conducted at NewsClick offices and residences of its employees.

Amit Chakraborty suffers from multiple health conditions owing to polio. Prabir Purkayastha is 74 years old. At the time, they were shoved into jail by Delhi Police without so much as even giving reasons for their arrests.
