New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Friday stayed probe into Pegasus case that the West Bengal government ordered through its Judicial Enquiry Commission headed by Supreme court judge Justice Madan B Lokur.
The Bench led by Chief Justice of India(CJI) NV Ramana expressed displeasure over the state initiating a probe when the Supreme Court already constituted an independent committee to do that.
Senior Advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi representing Bengal defended the move saying it was because the state government would have no say in the court-initiated Commission’s proceedings.
Pegasus row began on 18 July after The Wire and several other international media houses came out with reports that mobile numbers, including 40 Indian journalists and prominent citizens like like Rahul Gandhi, election strategist Prashant Kishore, former ECI member Ashok Lavassa etc were potentially hacked by the government using Israeli spyware Pegaus.
