New Delhi : In a major setback for Mamata Banerjee, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered CBI probe into the violence that erupted during post-poll days in the state. A 7-member committee set up by the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) had earlier looked into the incidents of violence following the West Bengal Assembly elections and petitioned the top court for a court-monitored CBI probe.
To be investigated are allegations of murder and rape that rose shortly after sweeping victory of the Trinamool Congress(TMC) defeating BJP in the elections. Also, the Calcutta High Court has directed for setting up of a Special Investigation Team(SIT) comprising senior officers from West Bengal cadre, to look into other allegations cited by the NHRC.
The SIT will have three IPS officers – soumer Mitra, Sumn Bala Sahoo and Ranbu Kumar and the proceedings shallbe monitored by retired judge of the Supreme Court.
