New Delhi: Although there’s development happening, citizens around the country are dying of starvations, observed Supreme Court, advising the Centre to provide ration cards to maximum possible numbers of migrant workers. The ruling was pronounced by Bench comprising Justices MR Shah and  BV Nagaratna on the suo motto case relating to problems gripping migrant workers in Covid conditions. Civil Food Supplies must  operate with view to potential number of ration cards to be issued.   Endeavour should be to achieve the pious goal of becoming a country where no one dies from hunger. Unfortunately,  in our country, even as development progresses we still have people dying of starvation. Then there are others who die of malnutrition.

Rural folks are staving off starvation by helping themselves to water. It is a way out both adults and children are resorting to, the Bench said.

The case will come up for hearing after two weeks.

Recently : The apex court on Monday pulled up the Union government for relying on outdated 2015 -16 data claiming there were no starvation deaths reported in the recent past.  In its previous hearing the Bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana had asked if the govt had any detailed statistics on starvation related deaths.
