NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed implementation of all three farm laws that collectively triggered unprecedented protests from farming community around the country. The ruling was delivered by a Bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde over a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the said laws.
The apex court has set up a special committee to study the contentious laws. The committee comprises experts including agricultural economist Ashok Gulathi, Harsimarthman, Dr. Pramod Joshi and Anil Wanvath. It is our endeavour to try resolve the issue within framework of our powers, Chief Justice said. There will be interim order toward protecting farmers’ lands and prevent sale of property for contractual farming, the court added.
The lawyer appearing for farm organisations , ML Sarma, clarified that the unions will not cooperate with any committee set up on the issue. There is no use of mediatory talks without first repealing the 3 farm laws, he said. The real problems faced by the farming community have not come before the court until yesterday, said Sarma adding that, the centre should become willing to withdraw its laws. The court that wields power to stay the laws is also empowered to order the government for its repeal, the lawyer pointed out.
