HYDERABAD : The state police gunning down four men accused of gangrape and murder of 26-year-old veterinary doctor, has kicked up controversy, with prominent public figures expressing concern over the unusual occurrence.
The drama played out on Friday amid widespread protests, over the woman’s gruesome murder that threatened to unseat theTelangana govt.
The incident becomes more intriguing given that, Commissioner VC Sajjanar, who headed the present case also helmed a strikingly similar ’encounter’ killing 11 years ago in Telangana’s Warangal. Both the incidents occurred in December
Way back in 2008, two engineering students Swapnika an T Prantiha were returning home on a two-wheeler, when 3 youths on a motorcycle approached alongside and threw sulphuric acid on them. The 1996 batch IPS officer, Sajjanar, headed the probe and all three accused S Srinivas, D Sanjay and Harikrishna were arrested. Three days later all suspects got killed in what was described as ‘encounter’ deaths. The incident made Sajannar an instant hero.
In the present case, the four murder accused men, were taken to the crime scene to collect evidence. Police claim the men suddenly got agitated, snatched gun from a cop and attempted to flee. The norm is to shoot a fleeing culprit below in such cases. However in the Friday incident, all four died on the spot.
After Human Rights, the Telangana High Court has taken cognizance of the state police killing and asked the bodies to be preserved for three days.
