NEW DELHI : The young will defend democracy from being butchered and it would do good for the govt to remember that it came to power taking oath on this country’s constitution, said CPI(M) Gen Secretary Sitaram Yechury in Delhi, Thursday.
The constitution makes no reference to religion on the subject of citizenship. It is Centre’s goal to create divides along religious lines. Such move is not suited to the unity and integrity of the nation, Yechury told reporters in the capital.
Referring to pleas against the new law, Yechury said that, it is hoped of the Supreme Court to uphold basic principles of the country’s constitution. There should be no deviation from the law, he said.
Several socio-cultural organisations and activists have reacted to the Citizenship Amenment. We shall mobilise support from them all to formulate further actions, Yechury said, adding that, the protests must continue.
Suspended internet services is now a major hassle in the capital. The govt went about this by issuing directives to private providers. Under Modi-Shah regime, India has become the country with highest incidence of internet suspension, Yechury said. The disruption spanning Kashmir and north eastern states has now reached Delhi too, he added.
Metros are shut, hitting people’s mobility to places venued for protests. The situation now is worse than times during emergency, he mused.
The youth of India are capable of defending the democracy from being butchered. Govt forgets its oath on the constitution, while coming to power. People are being hounded and dumped with baseless cases, in the name of anti-nationalism. In contrast, upholding constitutional and democratic values is where patriotism lies, said Yechury.
Peaceful protests are a constitutional right. Arrests of people including myself, was a in violation of that right. The police claimed unlawful assembly at the time of arrests. Govt attitude in this vein is simply unacceptable, the leader said.
Yechury was speaking to the media after being released from forced custody earlier in the day along with several veterans including CPI Gen Secretary D Raja, Prakash Karat and Vrinda Karat. Hundreds are defied prohibitory orders and gathered at Red Fort Thursday morning.
