New Delhi : Over 260 prominent members of the society wrotet to the Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud saying Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s speech calling to eradicate Sanatana Dharma amounted to hate speech and that action should follow over it. Not just that, Udhayanidhi continues to hold his ground on this account, the letter points out.
Udhayanidhi’s speech targets faith of the wide majority in this country. The speech runs against the secular values laid in the Constitution, the signatories to the letter that included 14 judges said. The letter has also been signed by 130 ex-bureaucrats and 118 ex-servicemen, who said this was blatant violation of the law and urged the apex court to take action suo motto.
The letter cites Supreme Court’s own ruling that instructs for quick action in the event of any hate speech without waiting for a formal complaint to be filed.
There should be action to protect the secular nature of the country. The government shows hesitance in this regard. The court must intervene, the letter read. The letter also accused Tamil Nadu government for refusing to take action of any kind in the incident.
