New Delhi : Death and suffering in Uttar Pradesh is far greater than presented to the world, suggests The Wire. Uttar Pradesh official data on Covid deaths is likely 60 times lower than actual figures, says “The Wire” in its report.
The numbers are based on a study conducted in the eastern district of Purvanchal, home to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency of Varanasi.
Between January 2020 to August 2021, the areas surveyed showed 60% more recorded deaths compared to numbers from 2019 records and govt data before the outbreak.
If this rate be applied to all districts of Uttar Pradesh, the state would have approx 14 lakh more deaths on the whole, meaning 60-times more fatalities than official death toll of 23,000
These numbers make UP one of the worst-hit sates in the country during the pandemic and the weakest in terms of reporting system.
