NEW DELHI : The Income Tax Department has attached "benami" assets worth Rs 1600 crores belonging to ex-AIADMK leader and VK Sasikala.

According to reports, Sasikala purchased prime properties in several parts of Tamil Nadu in the names of household staff like car drivers, servants, friends and business associates.

Of these, nine properties in Chennai, Puducherry and Coimbatore were allegedly procured using two high-value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000, after demonetisation in Nov 2016.

The I-T officials in their "Operation Clean Money" seized Sasikala's assets at 37 locations in the state.

Sasikala, a close aide of late CM J Jayalalithaa, is serving a four-year jail term, in a Bengaluru prison, in a disproportionate assets case.
