Russia Banned From Olympics, World Cup : Doping Fraud

Web Desk‌Updated: Tuesday Dec 10, 2019

The World Anti-Doping Agency(WADA) on Monday banned Russia from major global sporting events including Tokyo Olympics 2020 and World Cup in Qatar, for falsifying data from a doping testing laboratory . The ban will stand 4 years.  The probe into the manipulation began early this year.

The ruling is the toughest ever sanctions imposed on Russian state authorities.  The sentencing bars Russian officials from attending any major events and the country from hosting or even bidding for tournaments.

The sanction however allows, Russian sportsmen  and women to compete at the Olympics next year and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, but only as neutrals and provided they can demonstrate that they were not part of what WADA believes was a state-sponsored system of doping.

Also Russia can compete in qualifiers for 2022 football WorldCup, but  should they progress to finals in Qatar, the team will not represent the Russian Federation.

However the ban will have no effect on Russian participation in Euro 2020 and hosting Saint Petersburg, as they ar not defined as ‘major ‘event’ for anti-doping purposes.
