Doha, QATAR : Argentina came off in its best form ever in World Cup 2022 on Wednesday, beating Poland in 2-0 knockout to conclude Group C play and also finishing top of the group after a tournament-opening defeat to Saudi Arabia.
Premier League stars - Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister and Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez - shot the goals for Argentina. Alexis scored the first goal 60 seconds into the second half followed by Julian’s brilliant curled shot that sealed three points as Argentina advanced as Group C winner.
The opener came after the Argentina great, Messi, had his penalty saved by Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szcsezny.
While Messi is not involved in the goals, he proved to be menace for Poland right from the opening minute.
With crowning victory at end of the day, the 35-year-old looks set to emerge from the long shadow Diego Maradona has cast over the Argentina national side.
Poland will now face Australia in the last-16 while the second-placed Poland will take on reigning champions France.
