Malappuram : Well known footballer and former Santhosh Trophy star, Elakath Hamsa Koya died from Covid-19 related complications on Saturday. Hamsa, a Parapanangadi native residing at Tannur Road, was being treated at Manjeri Medical college for the infections when the end came early this morning. He had arrived from Mumbai last week along with family. Hamsa Koya’s wife, son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren aged a little above 3 years were also diagnosed with the coronavirus.

Hamsa Koya and family reached their residence at Tannur road on 21 May. Upon arrival, all members exhibited symptoms of the illness and remained under quarantine till 26 May, when their test results showed presence of the virus. They were then moved to hospital one by one, beginning with Hamsa’s wife who was first confirmed with the infection.
Hamsa Koya suffered from pneumonia and had a history of heart attack too. Settled in Mumbai, the former star played for Mohan Bhagan and Mohammadeens Football Club. Hamsa did his degree at PSMM ollege in Thiurangadi during 1975-77. He had formed a club comprising football stars from Parapanangadi. His son, Lihas Koya, is goal keeper with the Indian football team and wife Laila, a former volleyball star with Indian Railways.
The funeral, as per protocol, will be held at Parapanangadi later in the day.
