Tokyo: Japanese Prime Minister Yohihide Saga told parliament on Monday that Japan “would hold the already-postponed Olympics” this summer, pledging to get coronavirus surges around the country under control.

“We will have full anti-infection measures in place and proceed with preparation with a determination to achieve the Games that can deliver hope and courage throughout the world,” he told the legislators.

Meanwhile majority of Japanese were wary to share Saga’s optimism. Local opinion polls shows 80 percent of the public think the Olympics will or should not be held in Japan.

Japanese newspaper Yomskuri reported that International Olympic Committee just 6,000 athletes at the opening ceremony, down from initial number of around 11,000 from 200 countries.

Incidentally, should Olympics happen the athletes will not be allowed to arrive at Olympic Village more than five days before they compete and will be required to leave within 2 days of their event ending.
