Soccer icon Lionel Messi was suspended by Paris Saint- Germain(PSG) for going on a personal promotional trip to Saudi Arabia without prior permission.
Messi reportedly asked PSG for permission to travel to Saudi, which he did on Sunday night anyway. The trip had been postponed twice earlier due to team defeats. The club had denied Messi permission this time.
The 35-year-old was caught on camera in Riyadh on Monday and advertised his presence there on social media. Messi already serves as a tourism ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
Messi has been suspended for two games and fined ‘two week’ wages - a decision that followed a day of meetings between the club’s rungs. The action is in line with the new PSG policy driven by president Nasser Al-Khelaifi whereby, no one is bigger than the club. Not even World Cup winner Messi.
