Those Switching to e-SIMs Should Be Cautious; Kerala Police Issues Alert

Web Desk‌Updated: Friday Sep 20, 2024

Mobile phone users who planning to switch to e-SIMs should be vigilant: your SIM card could potentially be accessed by others, allowing them to take control of your bank accounts.
Kerala Police have issued a warning regarding possible scams that may occur when users convert their SIM cards to e-SIMs. This alert, shared on social media, states, 'Those intending to switch to the e-SIM system should be cautious of groups targeting them with scams.'

Scammers may pose as customer care representatives from mobile service providers, suggesting that you convert your current SIM card to an e-SIM. They might ask you to enter a 32-digit e-ID on the mobile provider's app or website to activate the e-SIM. They will also instruct you to send the QR code received via email to a WhatsApp number they provide.

Once scammers obtain the QR code, they can activate the e-SIM in your name, gaining full control over your SIM card and rendering your existing SIM inactive. They often claim that the e-SIM will be operational within 24 hours. If you do not act within this timeframe, they will seize control of all bank accounts linked to your mobile number, completing the scam.

To prevent such scams, be cautious of fake phone calls claiming to be from customer care centers. Always use the official app or website of your mobile service provider for any services. Never share QR codes, OTPs, or passwords from service providers with anyone. Avoid disclosing your financial information and transactions to others. Additionally, it's advisable to enable 'two-step verification' for all your digital accounts for enhanced security.
