Manama: Countries in the Gulf region continued to report more cases and fatalities due to coronavirus (COVID-19). Confirmed virus infection across the Gulf increased to 36,744, and deaths to 218 on Thursday night.
The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council have added more cases and deaths this week than last, as the pandemic spreads exponentially.
14 deaths and over 2,744 new positive cases of Covid-19 were recorded across the gulf, except Qatar, on Thursday, the highest one-day spike so far. Among the deaths reported yesterday, seven people died in Saudi Arabia, while four in the UAE, and Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman reported two each. Of the new fatalities, eight were expats.
Saudi Arabia had the most infections and deaths followed by the UAE. The death toll in the country rose to 121, while the number of confirmed cases climbed to 13,930, according to official data. The county recorded seven deaths, including six expats, and 1,158 new cases on Thursday the ministry of Health said.
Four more people succumbed to the virus in the UAE, taking the death toll in the country to 56. The number of confirmed cases rose to 8,756 after 518 more people tested positive for the virus on Thursday.
A 41-year-old citizen died of covid-19 in Kuwait, taking the death toll to 14. On Sunday, 151 people, including 61 Indians, were diagnosed with the disease, pushing the total infections to 2,399. A total of 1,310 Indians were confirmed with the virus to date.
A 36-year-old expat died of coronavirus in Bahrain, bringing the total deaths to eight, the ministry of health confirmed. The latest victim to the deadly virus was a native of Sikar in the Rajasthan state of India, sources said. The deceased was suffering from underlying and chronic health problems and received extensive 24-hour treatment from a specialised medical team, ministry added.
Bahrain reported 190 new cases on Thursday. Of these 165 were migrant workers, ministry said.
A total of 1,082 patients recovered and the active cases stood as 1127.
A 57-year-old expat died of coronavirus in the Sultanate of Oman on Thursday night, taking the death toll to 9. The country reported 102 fresh cases the same day.
Qatar confirmed 623 new cases on Thursday, bringing the total covid-19 cases to 7,764, Ministry of Public Health said.
The total registered cases across the GCC stands as Saudi Arabia-13,930, UAE-8,756, Qatar-7,764, Kuwait-2,399, Bahrain-2,217, and Oman-1,716.
