Five members of an all-girl Afghan robotics team fled to Mexico and have sought asylum there. They were accorded warm reception by the Mexican Deputy Foreign Minister Martha Delgado. “We give you the warmest welcome to Mexico, “ he said at a news conference at the city’s international airport on Wednesday.
The team members thanked the government for saving their lives. “We are happy to be here,” said one of the members, Fathemah Qaderyan, adding that “From now on we shall have opportunities for many more achievements in our lives.”
On Aug 18, the Mexico’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcelo EbrardEbrard said the country had begun “processing of the first refugee applications Afghan citizens, especially women and girls who have requested,” with the aid of Guillermo Puente Ordorica, ambassador of Mexico in Iran.
The girls are among thousands who fled the country after Afghan government collapsed last week and Taliban made its complete takeover.
