Manama: Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa has named Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa as the new prime minister, state news agency BNA reported on Wednesday, citing a royal decree.
The decree takes effect immediately, and will be published in the Official Gazette, the report added.
Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa holds the position of First Deputy Prime Minister before he was assigned to be the Prime Minister. He is also the Deputy Supreme Commander of Bahrain’s military.
Bahrain's late Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa died earlier on Wednesday at Mayo Clinic in the US. He was 84. Prince Khalifa was the world's longest-serving prime minister, assumed his post in 1970, just a year before Bahrain’s independence in 1971. He was born on November 24, 1935.
He had previously been the head of Bahrain’s State Council and the head of the Supreme Defense Council.
