LA PAZ : 24 people belonging to the indigenous tribe have been killed in Bolivia for protesting the coup that overthrew the democratically elected Left leader, Evo Morales 3 weeks ago.
The US backed interim govt, who orchestrated the coup, has carried out the shootings.All the deaths took place in a week’s time.
Morales supporters - the indigenous people largely hailing from rural regions of the country - had taken to cities in peaceful protest, when the army opened fire at their gathering.
Widespread attacks on the indigenous people are being reported from several parts. even as the country reels under political uncertainty and food crisis, post the coup.
The country with indigenous majority has no representation in the new government. The indigenous tribe on their part, refuse to acknowledge acknowledge the present rule, demanding return of their leader.
Many have joined protests, forsaking regular work and livelihood. Some of them returning from workplaces too fell prey to army bullets.
According to reports, the army, roving over in helicopters, routinely bursts teargas to disburse protesters below.
Despite the heavyhandedness, these crowds reiterate their refusal to acknowledge the coup and susequent govt, pledging support to their ousted leader Morales.
