Beijing : Not just the great wall, China as a country by itself is one of the world’s great wonders. Just 70 years ago, it was a poor Asian country. It’s history includes existence as a boycotted country that was rejected by UN for grant of membership. That was 50 years ago. Today, China is the world’s second-largest economy with some estimates suggesting it is poised to overtake US. China’s advancement is not limited to economy alone. Its strides in science and technology is enormous apart from eminence in sports and a military power that remains unparalleled. This day of Thursday marks the end of centenary celebrations of the Communist Party of China(CPC) across China – the party that conferred all existential greatness for the country’s masses.
The Chinese communist party, CPC, was formed in 1921 in secret in a small brick house in Shanghai by 12 delegates. The party had just 57 members in the first year. That number rose to 57967 by 1597. However, membership shrank to just 15,000 in the following year after forces of the ruling Kuomintang party massacred thousands of communists and their followers. Undaunted, CPC continued to organise uprisings that led to Chinese civil war. Later, defeating Kuomintang and Japanese invasion, CPC came to power in 1949 and a new China was born.In October of that year, the CPC founder and chairman, Mao Zedong, formally proclaimed the establishment of People’s Republic of China(PRC) and the party membership swelled to 45 lakhs. The party currently has 9.2 crore members.
The ongoing centenary celebrations commemorate 100th year of founding CPC with president Xi Jinping’s speech as main highlight of the closing ceremony.
