The former Chinese president Jiang Zemin has died of leukemia at a hospital in his home city of Shanghai. He was 96. The end came from multi organ failure at 12.13 pm local time this noon.
Jiang who led Communist party after 1989 Tiananmen crackdown led China into a decade of explosive growth by revival of market-oriented reforms, the return of Honk Kong from British rule in 1997 and Beijing’s entry into World Trade Organisation in 2001.
The ruling Communist Party, Parliament , Cabinet and military published a statement to the people of China that read “ Comrade Jiang Zemin’s death is an incalculable loss to our Party and our military and our people of all ethnic groups” and expressed “profound grief” in the demise.
