Coronavirus cases in Gulf cross 2,00,000 mark

Manama: The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the Gulf surpassed 2,00,000 on Wednesday, according to official data.

Latest figures indicate that some 2,00,789 people have contracted the virus across the six nation GCC. The death toll stands at 939, or nearly 0.46 % of those infected.

The GCC Statistical Centre’s online tally listed total recovery as 95,951.

The benchmark of 1,00,000 Covid-19 cases was reached on May 11, and it took the figure approximately 16 days to double.

The six nation Gulf recorded 5,640 new cases of infection on Wednesday alone, continuing an upward curve. 23 more deaths from coronavirus reported the same day.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia continued its top position in the Middle East on number of recoveries. The total recoveries in the Kingdom is far ahead of active cases. The total number of people who have contracted the virus in the country is 78,541. Of this, 51,022 people are fully recovered from the disease, or approximately 64.96 % of those infected. The active cases now stands at 27,094, according to Saudi Ministry of Health.

A total of 1,815 new cases of coronavirus and fourteen deaths were recorded in Saudi on Wednesday. The death toll rose to 425.

Kuwait reported three deaths on Wednesday. Kuwait confirmed 640 new cases, taking the country's infection tally to 23,267. The death toll increased in to 175.

The UAE, and Qatar reported two death each on Wednesday while Bahrain and Oman reported one each. 

A total of 1,740 new cases registered in Qatar, while 883 in UAE, and 327 in Bahrain. The death toll in the UAE rose to 255, while in Qatar it reached 30.

The fatality rate in Bahrain remains among the lowest in the GCC, just 15 deaths so far.

Oman recorded 255 cases on the same day. The death toll in Oman surged to 39 on Wednesday.

The number of active cases at Gulf stands at 1,03,899. The total infections cases are: Saudi Arabia-78,541, Qatar-48,947, UAE-31,969, Kuwait-23,267, Bahrain-9,692 and Oman- 8,373.

The coronavirus numbers in the Gulf are still much lower than in European countries and the US. Although most of the GCC states have witnessed a recent spike in cases, particularly among expat workers, their death rates have remained low in comparison to worse-hit countries in the world.
