Manama: The number of coronavirus cases within the Gulf states has now crossed the 1,00,000-mark, according to a GCC Statistical Centre tally based on official figures.
A spike of 4,816 confirmed infections and 19 deaths on Monday brought Gulf's total to 1,01,610 cases and 560 deaths.
The number has risen from 15,000 cases on April 14 to 100,000 less than a month later.
Saudi Arabia remains the hardest-hit country in the Gulf with the total number of cases and number of deaths. The kingdom confirmed 1,966 new infections on Monday, bringing the total to 41,014 out of a population of around three crore. In terms of the number of fatalities, the UAE is the second worst-hit state and as to cases, Qatar is the second.
Oman is the least worst-hit among the six nations. It has a total of 3,573 cases out of a population of 48 lakhs, after confirming 174 new cases on Monday.
The number of active cases at Gulf stands at 73,783, after 27,267 have been cured. The total infections cases are: Saudi Arabia-41,014, Qatar-23,623, UAE-18,878, Kuwait-9,286, Bahrain-5,236 and Oman-3,573.
The coronavirus numbers in the Gulf are still much lower than in European countries and the US, which is the new epicentre of the disease. But a recent spike in cases, particularly among expat workers, in the region is a matter of grave concern.
The gulf reported 19 death on Monday. Nine more people died in Saudi after contracting the virus. While, Kuwait registered seven deaths and the UAE three.
Seven more Keralites lost their lives to the killer virus in the last 24 hours. Of this, three people died in Dammam; Kunnamkulam kadavallur native Balan Bhasi (60), Ernakulam Mulanthuruthy native Benny (53), and Nilambur Marutha native Sudevan (52). Also, Simon (48), from Kodungallur, died in Abu Dhabi, while Vakkam native Sushilan (60) died in Dubai and Abdul Rasheed (60), who hails from Kilimanoor, died in Sharjah. Kozhikode Perumanna native Nuhaiman Karatt Moideen (43) died of Covid-19 in Kuwait on Monday.
The death toll in Saudi Arabia rose to 255. Of the nine latest deaths, seven were expats. The total number of recovery rose to 12,737 after the country registered 1,280 recoveries on Monday. The country has conducted 4,67,369 coronavirus in the country to date.
The covid-19 death toll in Kuwait rose to 65 after the country reported seven deaths on Monday. Kuwait confirmed 598 new infections, including 159 Indians, pushing the number of cases to 9,286. Of this, 3,376 are Indians.
The UAE confirmed 680 new cases and three deaths on Monday, bringing the total deaths to 201 and confirmed cases to 18,878. The recovery tally reached 5,381. The country carried out 26,763 new tests on Monday.
A total of 1,103 new cases registered in Qatar, while 295 in Bahrain.
