Gulf’s Confirmed Coronavirus Cases Top 600,000

Manama: The coronavirus pandemic passed 600,000 confirmed infections and 4,000 deaths in the six nation GCC on Friday.

The figures have roughly doubled in 44 days and continue to grow steadily.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the Gulf is 604,533, while the number of deaths are 4,099 according to the official data from GCC statistical centre.  

There is a sharp decline in newly infected cases in most of the countries. GCC took 12 days to reach four lakh cases and 11 days to five lakh cases, while it took 18 days to reach six lakh cases.

The GCC states took 102 days to cross the 100,000-mark since the outbreak first reported on January 29 in the UAE. Another 16 days to reach the benchmark 200,000 cases, exactly on 27 May and then in another 15 days, or in June 11, it went past the 300,000-mark. And it took another 12 days to reach 4 lakh cases. On July 7, it added 1 lakh more cases, and the caseload reached 5 lakh.

The GCC has been registering more new coronavirus recoveries than daily reported cases. The number of recoveries continued to surge on a daily basis.  Of the total number of confirmed infections in the Gulf, 84.87% or 513,134 patients were cured so far. The active cases now stand at 91,399, according to the updated official figures at 12 pm Friday.

Qatar is leading in the GCC with the highest numbers of recoveries- over 97 % or 1,05,420 recoveries out of the total 1,08,638 cases. The active cases in the country now stand at 3218.

Bahrain has registered 90.56 % recoveries. Out of 37,996 confirmed cases, 34,412 were cured to date.

Recoveries in the UAE rose to 88%, while more than 84% of infected patients in Kuwait now recovered from the virus.

In Saudi Arabia, more than 82% or 215,731patients have been cured so far. In Oman, the recovery rate is 72%.

Saudi Arabia is the GCC’s worst-hit country by the virus, and it remains the 13th position in the world in terms of having the highest number of infections.

Saudi Arabia, the largest Gulf state with a population of about 3.37 crore, has the highest count at 2,62,772 cases and 2,672 deaths.
