Moscow : A lone gunman, suspected to be a male student of the varsity, opened fire inside the campus at Perm State University in Russia that killed at least eight students and injured several others.
According to reports, some students and teachers locked themselves into classrooms during the attack. Media footage showed students jumping from first-floor windows to escape the fire and landing heavily on the ground before running to safety.
The suspect has been killed in the incident. “He was liquidated,” said university spokesperson Natalia Pechischeva.
The gunman was an 18-year-old whoposted a picture of him on social media posing with a rifle, helmet and ammunition.
“I’ve thought about this for a long time. It’s been years and I realized the time had come to do what I dreamt of,” he said on a social media account. The post was taken down later. The motive, the suspect later revealed, was not related to politics or religion.
Russia has strict gun laws but some categories of guns are available for purchase for hunting, self-defence port are allowed after eligible persons passed tests and met other requirements.
