NEW DELHI : The coronavirus cases in India surpassed 2 lakh and fatalities now stands at 5700. The country’s first COVID-19 infection was recorded on 30 January in Kerala. Within 109 days of the outbreak on 18 May, the number of cases rose to whopping one lakh countrywide and has since swollen to the present 2 lakh. If the growth rate of cases were to continue at this pace the country will likely register 4 - 5 lakh infections by June-July, and 1100 deaths and 40,000 fresh cases on daily basis at that time.
There have occurred 2500 deaths in the past two weeks. Currently, only U.S., Brazil and Russia reports daily spike in cases higher than that of India. While European countries including U.K, where the COVID situations were alarming, keeps infections under control by locking down and other measures, India is steadily unwinding and witnessing record surges with each passing day.
8171 fresh virus cases and 204 deaths have been registered in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry. Maharashtra, the country’s hardest-hit state, recorded 103 deaths and 2287 new cases on Tuesday. The infections so far climbed over 72,000. Tamil Nadu, for third day straight in a row, recorded more that 1000 new cases daily. The state recorded 1091 cases on Tuesday, taking its Covid tally up to now to 24,586. Is death toll now stands at 197, an increase of 13 from Monday’s total. Gujarat recorded 29 deaths an d 415 new cases on Tuesday. Its tally up to now is 17,632 infections and 1092 deaths.
The state-wise tally for infections stands at : 177 Jammu Kashmir, 296 Haryana, 41 Punjab, 396 Bengal, 104 Bihar, 115 Andhra Pradesh, 141 Odisha, 28 Assam, 40 Uttarakhand, 14 Jharkhand, 23 Tripura, 273 Rajasthan, 348 Uttar Pradesh and 137 Madhya Pradesh. Mizoram, the covid-free state until now, has recorded 12 cases while Nagaland reported 6 on Tuesday.
The Health Ministry meanwhile put recovery rates for the country at 48.07 percent. 3708 people were discharged after cure in the past 24 hours. There are 97,581 people under treatment presently. The official death rate, one of the world’s lowest, figures at 2.82 percent.
According to ICMR expert Dr Niveditha Gupta , India has not reached its peak-level yet. The country has however been successful in keeping its death rates low, she added.
